Situation in Pattani, Thailand
Posted October 29, 2008on:
Protesters, local Muslim students and people of all ages, are staging a rally at a Pattani mosque. It reached its climax when they blocked three roads leading to Hat Yai district, Narathiwat and Yala around two-and-a-half hours, preventing vehicles from passing through to those areas. Their 10 demands are among others :
– a call to withdraw military rangers from the region.
– lifting the curfew imposed by the government.
In recent day, the ongoing militant attacks have left several soldiers dead and scores wounded among police and military and also rising numbers of civilian casualties.
In solving the problem, Council for National Security (CNS) chairman Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratkalin conducted a 90-minute meeting with the prime minister and decide to revisit at Pattani’s central mosque, and meet with Muslim religious leaders in an attempt to prevent the demonstration from getting out of hand.
